Understand a Sandwich

A sandwich is a food typically filled with either vegetables, sliced cheese or meat. It is a simple meal of two or more slices of bread served either hot or cold. It is typically a lunchtime food, taken to work and school, but can also be packed for road trips or picnics. A sandwich can be plain, or toasted coated with either margarine or a healthier option such as butter.  Condiments such as mayonnaise or mustard, tomato sauce or chutney can be added to enhance its flavor and texture. Sandwiches are predominantly homemade but are also widely sold in restaurants and kiosks. Depending on the kind of bread that is used to make up a sandwich it can be classified as a light lunch time option.

What are the health benefits of sandwiches?  Well because it is a grain food the bread is a common source of carbohydrates, which provides a slow release energy.  The fiber in the whole grain prevents cancer. Vitamin B, niacin, thiamine, folic acid and riboflavin can help to prevent memory loss, increased intake of grain-based foods help to replenish serotonin levels and increase the body’s conforming response.

Sandwiches are divided into four parts namely, the base: Various types of bread slices or bread rolls act as an underline. Spreading: condiments such as Mayonnaise or mustard can be applied to the bread in order to make it moist or sticky creating a better grab for other ingredients such as meats, cheeses or vegetables. Body: It is the combination of different fillings and finally the Garnish: It is the agent which enhances the presentation of the food. For example cherry tomatoes, olives, stripped carrots or parsley.

There are various kinds of sandwiches which are categorized according to their substantial look and ambiance. Some of the most popular kinds of sandwiches is the Clubhouse sandwiches, regular sandwiches, open sandwiches or grilled sandwiches.

Clubhouse sandwich – sandwich of bread, sliced cooked poultry, ham or fried bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. It is often cut into quarters or halves and held together by cocktail sticks. Modern versions frequently have two layers which are separated by an additional slice of bread.

Regular sandwich – This sandwich is very generic, it can be almost anything eaten between two pieces of bread

An open Sandwich is also known as an open-face/open-faced sandwich, consists of one or more slices of bread with one or more food items on top

A grilled sandwich – They’re grilled sandwiches with several ingredients, with the most important ingredient being melted cheese.

Sandwiches are cut and shaped into even sizes and can be served with French fries, flavored crisps or a small green salad. Sauces like tomato ketchup may be served in a separate bowl along with them.

A few ideas of popular sandwich choices for any occasion, grilled ham cheese and tomato sandwich, regular chicken mayo sandwich, beef salad sandwich, bacon chicken and salad club sandwich smothered in a tangy mayonnaise.

Sandwich fillings are varied but they must have nutritive balance and a complete color contrasts. Some examples are smoked herring, smoked salmon, roast beef slices, roast turkey, roast lamb, ham, poultry accompanied by salad options such as tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, onions and gherkins or dairy options such as cream cheeses, normal cheeses or matured cheeses.
